What a Gem!

My husband that is. We woke up late this morning (as we do most mornings) and set off at about 9:30am in search of a pretty piece of jewelry in the small town of Sapphire. We didn’t have to go far. We revisited a place that we had wandered into on arrival Sunday evening, when we weren’t really looking at making a purchase. Sometime between that first visit and this next one we had become a little more serious. There are so many jewelry shops in Sapphire and its neighbour Rubyvale that it can be a little overwhelming. Anyway, I have deviated from my story.

This morning we decided to have another (more serious) look at Kath’s . . . It is closing down as Kath is hoping to sell and retire – she look about 75 – 80 years of age and looks to be in ailing health. She casts/makes the jewelery herself, and the stones are locally sourced. We hadn’t been looking for too long when we found what we were looking for. Something a little different, with several gems and a pretty little arrangement. I tried the ring on and liked it. Then Simon pointed out the necklace that goes with the ring. I thought it was stunning, but was a little hesitant as we haven’t bought fancy jewelry since we got married.

for good deals....

for good deals….

When we went to pay for it Simon asked if she accepted credit card – and she did – in the old fashioned way – you know, the one where they take and imprint of the card and you sign for it – the boys were slightly amused having never seen one, and we all had a good laugh. She even gave the boys a few things they had chosen to buy. Lovely country service. Needless to say I have spent the rest of the day feeling very precious. It’s not every day I get some new fancy jewelry – something so beautiful.

After that rather exciting morning we went to a different mining place, Miners Cottage, and paid $10 for a bucket of dirt which kept the boys happy for about 2 and a half hours searching for gems. They got quite a few gems, and some sapphires which the lady said would be suitable for cutting. Jonathan even found a 23 carot sapphire – think he is pretty impressed with himself. Simon took some video.

Recommend this place. Lady was very helpful and nice, we got good gems, and the price was right.

So, the gemfields were a success. The boys are happy with their precious gems, I’m happy with my new jewelry and Simon is pretty happy with his purchase too!

  1. Wow!!! Your a very lucky girl Nicole…
    You deserve it:-)
People go on trips like you guys are and when they enter gem/gold fields they get the bug/fever, not in a sick way but a gold fever and gem bug…
Some stay for good others return once even twice a year…
I can’t wait to do some gem fossicking for sapphires with my family…
Looks like your boys may have the gem bug 🙂 not a bad thing…
    Enjoy take care…

  2. My goodness Nicole thats such a lovely piece or should I say pieces! Glad you are all having a great time. Have you had time for any of the school work? Love to all xxx

  3. Hey George, yeah, it was like that for the nice lady who runs Miners Cottage (she reminds me of Aunty Kathy!). She’s from New Zealand, and came to the gemfields during a holiday with her sister. She liked it so now lives half the year in NZ, and the other half (gem season – winter) in Rubyvale. Been doing that running the business for 7 years now.

Not sure why there is a gem season (or ‘off season’), perhaps it gets too hot out here in summer for visitors!

For anyone wanting to do a bucket of wash, I’d recommend going to Miners Cottage ($10 bucket). She has done the place up nicely, and is real helpful. If your interested in doing your own mining/digging, there were a couple of places on Keilambete Rd that do all day self drive tours – where they supply the equipment and take you out to proper mining areas and show you what to do. This would be better than what we did at Bobby Dazzlers, for around the same dollars. This would be a good way to start before going off on your own.

The boys do love it – we’ll have to come out and do a gem fossicking camping trip together with you guys sometime!

  4. Very pretty Nicole – lucky you! The movie is great also – what a wonderful time you are having. You will have to extend the time to a year! 😛
