Edith Falls, Nitmiluk NP

Edith Falls is also part of Nitmiluk NP, being a 50 minute or so drive from Katherine Gorge campground (got to drive through Katherine itself). It is a completely different style waterway to Katherine gorge, being a creek with waterfalls and swimming holes at the base (more similar to what we’d see in SE QLD) and is very beautiful.

This morning we did the 2.6km Leiyn walk that takes you up to the upper falls (not too big a walk after the previous days outings!). The swimming area up there is smaller than the large plunge pool of the main/lower Edith Falls itself (but still a decent size), but is more interesting so we spent quite some time up there swimming and relaxing by the water.

Here are some pics from this morning…

Well worth visiting, and staying for a night or two if in need of a rest!

Following this we headed off to Kakadu, and are spending the night near Cooinda. I was keen on going to Maguk/Barramundi Gorge, and though the sign said ‘4wd only’ the road looked very good. Nicole didn’t want to do it, so I checked with another traveller, who’d just driven out. He said the road was perfectly easy the whole way except for 100m of sand, but he said that we’d do it fine.

Well, the road was the best dirt road I’ve driven on, but I finally found the limits of the motorhome in that stretch of sand. Yep, we got bogged! Tried shoveling a bit of sand away, but further attempts to drive out were digging us in, so I decided to wait till next vehicle comes along and get a tow (I brought the 4wd gear with us!!). Nicole was freaking out, and a nearby grass fire didn’t help her concerns. But sure enough 5-10 mins later another vehicle arrived and we roped them in to towing us out. The motorhome has no towing points at the rear, so I had to get the strap around the rear axle which was really messy when bogged in the dirty sand, but aside from that we got out OK!!

Of course I got in big trouble from Nicole for that one, but afterwards I’ve never seen her smile and grin so much!! I think she was planning a blog post…. or maybe I should just go 4wd’ing more often despite the protests???

    • Yeah, that’s what Nicole says….. I’m just willing to take measured calculated risks when the consequences of failure are minor! 🙂 We are in a self sufficient motorhome – could have stayed / lived in the middle of that small sand patch for a week without issue!!! Would have had about 200 cars either side of us waiting though, lol.

Hate to think of all the places/things I would have missed out on if an ‘appropriate vehicle’ were required – Victorian alps/highlands, Fraser Island, etc etc

  1. Wow you must be doing something right with that camera of yours as those photos look brilliant…

I hear you can see some unforgettable places if you had a 4×4 but so far what you have posted are amazing…

You guys keep safe and enjoy every day with each other, that’s what life is about enjoying Gods creation and staying strong in his word as a family…

  2. Keep adventuring! Getting bogged is sonething to talk about! Just missed you at Edith Falls. We finidhed the 5 night Jatbula trail today and fly home tomorrow.

  3. LOL just looked at the movie of the bogging now that I am home and have good internet! Oh my goodness! I bet the owner of that 4wd was happy LOL…. did he have a smell of burning clutch by the end of it?

    • Nah, he was just spinning his wheels and spraying sand all over the back of the motorhome!

It wasn’t badly bogged – was still just sitting on the wheels, not the underbody or anything!

Mitsubishi Challengers are fairly light, which wouldn’t have helped.

It was a snatch strap, so he could have used momentum a little more to his advantage than he did….
